Rabbi Dov Yitziv Publishes "Pure Heart Create For Me" - Laws of Repentance in Rhyme

Dov Yitziv, the associate dean of the Ohr V'Yeshua Yeshiva in Haifa, has published a new book titled "Pure Heart Create For Me - Laws of Repentance in Rhyme." The book presents the ten chapters of the Laws of Repentance from Maimonides' "Mishneh Torah" in a rhyming poetic format, aiming to aid in memorization and study, especially in preparation for the High Holy Days. The 80-page book covers the laws from their inception to the tenth chapter, which focuses on serving God out of love. Yitziv's goal is to make the study of these laws more accessible and engaging through song and rhyme, integrating them into the period of repentance.

This is Yitziv's second work combining Halakha (Jewish law) with rhyme. In 2022, he published "And a Good Heart is Better Than a Feast Always - Laws of Purim in Rhyme," which adapted the laws of Purim from the Shulchan Aruch into verse. Yitziv notes that writing laws in rhyme is a rare style in religious literature, though historical precedents exist, citing Rabbi Yosef Tov Elem for Passover laws and Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook for Hanukkah laws.

Yitziv has been developing this rhyming method for over two decades, starting as a yeshiva student. He found that rhyming made reviewing material, such as the Talmud, more fluid and enjoyable. He hopes this new book will encourage people to engage with the laws of repentance, preparing them for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and potentially inspiring introspection and return.

The book also includes "A Story About Hillel, Prince of Israel." Yitziv is also working on a more extensive rhyming adaptation of the laws of Sukkot, which he hopes to publish in the future, viewing his work as an ongoing project to make Torah study unique and accessible.
