Hapoel Holon Loses 14-Point Lead, Falls to Kiryat Ata in Winner's Cup Qualifier

Hapoel Holon squandered a 14-point lead and lost to Kiryat Ata 83-79 in a dramatic Winner's Cup qualifier on Tuesday. The victory propelled Kiryat Ata into the tournament's play-in round. The game, played before 1,200 spectators at the Toto Hall, was characterized by significant scoring runs from both sides.

Holon started strong, establishing an early 16-6 lead, with Caldwell-Harris performing well. However, Kiryat Ata fought back, closing the gap and even taking a brief lead at 24-23. Holon responded with a 13-0 run and extended their advantage in the third quarter, reaching a commanding 60-46 lead.

Kiryat Ata, however, staged a remarkable comeback. Fueled by the play of David Green and the determination of Israeli prospects Daniel Sharon and Tomer Assaig, they launched a 9-0 run to narrow the deficit. The lead changed hands multiple times in the final quarter, with Kiryat Ata eventually taking a 70-66 advantage.

In a tense finish, Holon regained the lead, but decisive late baskets from Green and Holland Woods secured the win for Kiryat Ata. Nes Ziona had already clinched the top spot in Group B. Kiryat Ata will now face the runner-up of Group A in the play-in round on September 23rd. A victory there would set up a match against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Anarbox.
