Israel Nuclear Watchdog Head Warns Iran on Nuclear Ambitions

The head of Israel's Atomic Energy Commission, Moshe Edri, delivered a stark warning to Iran during his annual address at the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. Edri, leading the Israeli delegation from September 15-18, 2026, focused on regional developments, particularly Iran's "negative role" in destabilizing the region and the world. He accused Iran of threatening Israel's existence, attacking neighboring countries and American forces, and damaging civilian nuclear facilities with drones.

Edri highlighted Iran's non-compliance with IAEA safeguards, noting the agency's Board of Governors' recent resolution finding Iran in breach of its inspection obligations. He stated that Iran has been blocking IAEA inspectors from accessing sensitive nuclear sites for over a year, a move that prompted the Board to report the issue to the UN Security Council. According to Edri, Iran continues to develop missile infrastructure while advancing its military nuclear program in defiance of UN resolutions.

"Israel will not stand idly by in the face of threats to its existence," Edri declared, asserting that Israel has acted in the past to ensure its survival and will do so again if necessary. He emphasized that a world without Iran's military nuclear program would be safer.

Edri also addressed Syria, referencing an IAEA report on the secret construction of a reactor in Deir ez-Zor. He stated that the report validated Israel's intelligence and actions regarding Syria's clandestine nuclear weapons program, suggesting that without Israel's intervention at the time, the Assad regime would possess military nuclear capabilities today.

On the occasion of the IAEA's 70th anniversary, Edri congratulated the agency and its Director-General, acknowledging their achievements and Israel's productive cooperation with the IAEA in nuclear safety, security, and peaceful applications.
