Nofar Energy to Build 103 Million Euro Energy Storage Facilities in Romania
Nofar Energy, an Israeli renewable energy company, announced plans to construct energy storage facilities adjacent to two of its solar projects in Romania. The total investment for these facilities will amount to 103 million euros (approximately 360 million shekels).
The company has entered into an agreement with an international supplier for the purchase, supply, and operation of battery energy storage systems with a combined capacity of 1.09 gigawatt-hours. These systems will be integrated with the two solar projects.
Specifically, the Valter Maracineanu project, designed for 178 megawatts, will feature a 650 megawatt-hour storage system costing an estimated 57 million euros. The Corbii Mari project, with a planned capacity of 282 megawatts, will have a 440 megawatt-hour storage system, estimated at 46 million euros. Both solar projects are nearing completion, with their construction expected to conclude in the third quarter of 2027. Equipment delivery for the storage systems is anticipated to commence in 2027.
Nofar Energy has already commissioned two other projects in Romania this year and has a third project ready for grid connection, totaling 361 megawatts. The company also signed a preliminary agreement in May for adjacent storage systems for two of these projects, with a combined capacity of 860 megawatt-hours and an expected completion in early 2027.
As of the end of June, Nofar Energy operated solar projects with a total capacity of 2.1 gigawatts, spread across the US, Israel, and Italy, along with an additional 427 megawatts through its stake in Alumay. The company's current operational energy storage capacity is relatively small, standing at 183 megawatt-hours at the end of June. However, it has a significant pipeline of 2.1 gigawatts in solar projects under construction or planned, complemented by 10.7 gigawatts of planned storage capacity.
