IDF Overhauls Defense Doctrine After October 7th Lessons

The Israeli military has undergone a fundamental shift in its defense doctrine following the October 7th attacks, moving away from a traditional division of responsibilities and the notion of the Air Force solely supporting ground forces. The new operational concept integrates air, sea, and land forces as equal partners in border defense. Recent extensive drills simulated extreme, multi-front scenarios, including large-scale ground incursions, maritime attacks with jet skis and unmanned vessels, massive rocket fire, and drone threats. The central scenario prepared for was not just for specific intelligence-based threats but also for widespread collapse or surprise.

The updated air defense strategy emphasizes proactive force deployment within the first hour of an incident, rather than just reactive support. Senior Air Force officials highlighted the need to improve fighter jet involvement in ground defense, alongside attack helicopters and drones. An automated infrastructure has been established to enable immediate action against invasions and to "freeze the situation" before a full picture emerges on the ground. This includes heavy firepower, rapid deployment of multiple aircraft, and reduced response times, such as relocating helicopter squadrons to the north.

To enhance synchronization, squadron commanders and their deputies have met with ground unit commanders to better understand battlefield challenges. The southern and eastern fronts present unique complexities due to geography and demographics. In the Eilat region, drills focused on managing simultaneous threats like ground attacks, mass casualty events, and attacks on strategic assets, alongside air-sea threats. Security forces also practiced multi-organizational coordination between the IDF, police, Magen David Adom (MDA), and civilian emergency services in preparation for the holiday season, when Eilat's population significantly increases.

The modern defense concept also aims to push threats away from population centers by creating forward security zones deep within enemy territory. The IDF stresses that it will no longer tolerate enemy forces or terrorists being a short drive from Israeli civilians. Recent exercises included practicing the repulsion of attacks by directly targeting enemy command and control centers deep inside enemy territory. The military plans to utilize advanced electronic systems, updated rules of engagement, and camouflage measures, along with air and sea control, to prevent drone and unmanned vessel infiltration.
