Settler Encampment in Galilee Sparks Protests, Ex-MK Warns of West Bank Model

Residents of Majd al-Krum in the Galilee have launched protests and sit-ins against a settler group known as "Hilltop Youth" that erected tents and animal pens in the mountainous Al-Rous area. The land is within the local council's jurisdiction and partially owned by Arab citizens of the town.

Former Knesset member and head of the Arab Center for Alternative Planning, Dr. Hanna Sweid, described the settler action as a "provocative stunt" targeting Majd al-Krum and the Arab community. He emphasized that the tents were erected despite the firm rejection of local residents and the council, which holds legal authority over the land.

Dr. Sweid warned that this presence, though currently symbolic and limited, carries dangerous implications. He stated it represents a practical application of statements by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has suggested extending the West Bank settlement model to the Negev and Galilee by establishing illegal outposts supported by far-right organizations. Sweid cautioned that this could be repeated in other Arab towns if not seriously confronted, noting that extremists aim to signal that power now lies with right-wing forces, not citizens or local Arab authorities.

Sweid praised the popular movement in Majd al-Krum as a "pioneering model" for deterrence, combining broad popular opposition through demonstrations with legal action to challenge the illegal construction and land seizure. He concluded that these provocations, despite their danger, serve as a "wake-up call" and a catalyst for mobilizing the Arab public, urging citizens to use these "racist practices" as motivation to participate actively in upcoming elections and increase Arab representation in the Knesset to counter these plans and secure their land rights.

Journalist Adham Habiballah reported from the scene that police cordoned off the Al-Rous area, preventing Arab residents, activists, and protesters from reaching their land and confronting the attempted takeover. He noted that the authorities provide protection and facilities to the settlers while restricting the movement of landowners and town residents, escalating public anger and frustration.
