Former IDF Soldier Teaches Self-Defense to London's Haredi Community
Keinan David, a former IDF soldier and martial arts expert, is working to integrate self-defense and fitness training into London's Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jewish community. David, who grew up in South Africa before moving to Israel at 18 and later settling in London, believes Haredim are a "clear target for antisemites" and aims to equip them with the skills to protect themselves.
He established a dedicated club for the Haredi community, adapting his approach to their specific needs and sensitivities. David explains that marketing and messaging must be carefully tailored, avoiding aggressive language and focusing instead on physical activity, health, discipline, and building self-confidence. While self-defense techniques are taught, they are not overtly promoted, with the primary emphasis on fitness and well-being, or addressing issues like bullying and energy management in children.
David notes a growing awareness within the Haredi community about the need for self-protection, particularly since the October 7th attacks. However, he acknowledges that some remain resistant to engaging with the topic, preferring to focus on their religious lives. He also runs a separate, more conventional club for secular and traditional Jewish individuals in a more liberal area of London.
Reflecting on his own experiences, David has encountered antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment in mainstream London gyms, leading many Jews to seek more community-focused environments like his. He observes a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in London over the past decade, with around 3,700 reported events this year, a threefold rise since he arrived. Despite this, he is impressed by the community's resilience, with many continuing their Jewish way of life publicly, albeit with increased security presence.
