Freed Hostage Omer Shem Tov Recounts 505 Days of Hamas Captivity

Omer Shem Tov, who was abducted by Hamas from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, has shared his harrowing experiences after 505 days in captivity in Gaza. He detailed the profound loneliness, hunger, physical abuse, and psychological torture he endured.

Shem Tov described his most difficult trial as complete isolation. After being separated from fellow hostage Itai Regev, he spent 50 days in total darkness in a cell too small to stand upright. His only light source was a small flashlight dropped by a guard, which he carefully preserved, fearing its light would extinguish permanently.

He also spoke of constant hunger, with hostages receiving minimal food and often imagining the smells of food from outside. Physical violence was also a part of his captivity. Shem Tov recalled being beaten with a broomstick by a guard who had just informed him of a friend's death.

Before his release, Hamas forced hostages to participate in a staged ceremony. Shem Tov was compelled to kiss the head of Sabai Abu Hasna, a Nukhba operative involved in his detention. This event deeply affected him, though he later realized Israelis understood the coercive nature of his actions.

Shem Tov emphasized the lasting psychological impact of his captivity, with sounds of explosions, fireworks, and even airplanes triggering memories of his ordeal. His story serves as a stark reminder of what Hamas hostages have faced and underscores the ongoing efforts to secure the release of all remaining captives.
