IDF May Expand Lebanon Operation After Capturing Key Ridge

The Israeli military's capture of the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon could open new operational possibilities, including a potential advance towards Nabatieh, a major Shiite stronghold, according to retired Brigadier General Harel Knafo. Knafo, former head of the Southern Command's staff and a member of the 'Bishlavonim' movement, explained that the ridge's strategic location makes it a crucial "pivot" and "launching point" for further actions.

Nabatieh and Tyre are described as the two most important Shiite cities in southern Lebanon, forming the basis for surrounding villages. Knafo suggested that entering these cities and securing them would effectively neutralize Hezbollah's presence in the region, though he cautioned that such a move is "certainly possible as a next step" but not necessarily imminent.

Knafo also addressed the drawdown of forces in certain areas of southern Lebanon, clarifying that this is due to operational considerations and the successful destruction of targets, not a sign of ending the campaign. He warned against complacency, comparing the ongoing fight against Hezbollah to the long-term struggle against ISIS, emphasizing that the "project is not over."

The capture of the Ali Taher ridge, which previously housed a Hezbollah command center, is seen as a significant achievement that could pave the way for expanded Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.
