German Election Victory Boosts Israeli Defense Industry Prospects

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's victory in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt is expected to benefit Israel's defense industry. Ulrich Siegmund, a co-chair of the AfD faction in the state parliament and likely future state premier, has expressed support for the establishment of production facilities by Elbit Systems. Siegmund stated that while his party opposes war, it does not oppose the defense industry, citing its importance for "internal security, the country's stability, and its defense." He further suggested that such products would be relevant for future "re-emigration and deportations," drawing criticism from left-wing parties who decried the remarks as provocative and justifying violence.

Elbit's German subsidiary has already identified a 130-hectare site in the Sangerhausen industrial zone for the new facility. Other parties in Saxony, excluding the left, do not object to the project, which is anticipated to create hundreds of jobs and provide a financial boost to the region. The plant will focus on producing components and elements, not finished products like drones or munitions.

In parallel, negotiations are underway for the state-owned Israeli defense firm Rafael to establish production facilities in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony. This project involves repurposing a Volkswagen production complex to manufacture components for Iron Dome air defense systems.
