WeSure Acquires Control of Altshuler Shaham Investment House
WeSure, a digital insurance company, is set to acquire a controlling stake in the prominent investment house Altshuler Shaham. The deal, which has not yet been finalized, will significantly elevate WeSure's position in the capital market, transforming it into a leading financial group. Altshuler Shaham, which manages approximately NIS 150 billion, saw its founders, Gilad Altshuler and Kalman Shaham, who hold a 55% stake valued at NIS 811 million, looking to exit active management and realize their investment. This move aligns with a broader trend of founding generations in large investment firms seeking to cash out.
WeSure's acquisition of Altshuler Shaham follows its previous successful takeover of Ailon Insurance four years ago for approximately NIS 450 million. At the time, the price was considered inflated, but Ailon's value has since surged to NIS 3 billion, highlighting the leadership's acumen in identifying valuable assets. This track record suggests WeSure's founders, Emil Vainshal and Nitzan Tsa'ir Harim, possess a keen eye for strategic acquisitions.
The integration is expected to be smooth, particularly with Yair Weinstein, CEO of Altshuler Shaham's public arm and a key figure in its provident funds, who will likely play a crucial role. Both Altshuler Shaham's pension operations and Ailon Insurance have ambitious growth targets, with Ailon aiming to manage NIS 100 billion within five years. These goals may facilitate regulatory approval from the Competition Authority, as Altshuler Shaham's provident funds are not expected to exceed the 15% market share limit, potentially avoiding issues with the Capital Markets Authority as well.
However, potential regulatory hurdles, similar to those delaying the sale of Kalkal, cannot be entirely ruled out. The founders' desire to exit marks a significant career milestone, driven by their sharp business instincts meeting the founders' wish to step away from daily operations. While the future of the Altshuler Shaham brand remains uncertain, WeSure is likely to retain it, leveraging the firm's established reputation, much like they did with Ailon.
