Technion President Warns AI Could Replace Human Thought

Despite AI's capabilities, Sivan believes machines cannot replicate the human moment of discovery. He recalled a doctoral student's late-night breakthrough after a year of struggle, highlighting that such "eureka moments" are essential to scientific education. He stressed that the journey of learning, facing failure, and creating new knowledge is paramount, especially in an era of rapid technological answers. Sivan urged maintaining curiosity and independent thought.
Looking towards the new year, Sivan expressed concern not about technological challenges, but about societal divisions within Israel. He believes science and technology should serve society, and universities have a responsibility to educate future generations with this perspective. "What worries me more than anything is the fragmentation in our society," Sivan said. "My wish for the coming year, and indeed forever, is that we find a way to live together despite our differences. We have so much in common, and so many challenges. Let's focus on them."
