In an exclusive interview Thursday with Channel 14, U.S. President Donald Trump struck an optimistic tone about the new agreement signed the previous night between Washington and Tehran. He said he believes the deal will ultimately bring about the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program and the Hezbollah organization, and that it could help reshape the Middle East.
Trump also rejected reports that the United States might impose a weapons embargo on Israel if it continues military activity in Lebanon. “I have never heard those rumors,” he said. On Hezbollah’s arms, he was blunt: “Hezbollah needs to be disarmed.”
Asked what would happen if Iran failed to honor its commitments and dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, Trump said the U.S. is in a good position but warned of force if needed. “I think we are in a very good position. They will agree, and if not, they will be attacked very strongly,” he said.
Trump was also asked whether Washington would support Israel if Jerusalem chose to act independently against Iranian nuclear facilities. He answered cautiously, “If it is a limited attack, בהחלט” [“definitely”]. Despite recent reports of ups and downs in his ties with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said their relationship remains strong, calling it “very good, excellent.”
