Iran Analyst: US to Pressure Israel for Regional Ceasefire

An Iranian analyst believes the United States will pressure Israel to agree to a key Iranian condition for a regional ceasefire, according to an article in the Israeli newspaper Maariv. Trita Parsi stated that the collapse of a memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington highlights Iran's insistence on including a clause for a comprehensive regional truce.

Parsi explained that the proposed agreement was meant to include an immediate cessation of hostilities in Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and Yemen. He asserted that the U.S. had agreed to this condition and committed to pressuring Israel to comply. The analyst emphasized that the breakdown of the memorandum made Iran's demand for a regional ceasefire appear even more crucial, suggesting it also served U.S. interests.

Recent events, according to Parsi, indicate a widening conflict across multiple fronts. He noted intense confrontations in Lebanon and described military actions in the Persian Gulf as nearly normalized. Parsi also pointed to significant Houthi advances, enabling them to easily block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and reported damage to a Saudi oil pipeline bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

These developments, Parsi assessed, increase the risk of further regional violence. He argued that isolated agreements on issues like the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program, or sanctions relief would be unstable without a broader regional ceasefire.
