Border Police officers in southern Israel detained several suspects on Wednesday on suspicion of stealing more than a ton of watermelons from farmland near Nahal Oz. The suspects were found in agricultural fields near the community and were loading the produce into their vehicles.
After a report was received, officers were dispatched to the area. When they arrived, they spoke with the landowner, who said no agricultural work was taking place at that hour and that he had not authorized anyone to take produce from his property.
Police said they saw several vehicles and suspects loading watermelons, then froze the scene, called in additional forces and searched the vehicles. The stolen produce was found inside, weighing more than one ton in total.
The landowner filed a complaint. The suspects were taken for questioning by the Border Police’s southern investigative unit, and police said further investigation is expected. The article also recalls a separate case from last year, when the so-called “transformer gang” was arrested after allegedly stealing more than 20 Israel Electric Corporation transformers across the Negev to extract copper, causing damage worth millions of shekels.
