App Resumes Scraping Israel Railways Data Amid Accuracy Concerns
The dispute between Israel Railways and the developers of the Better Rail transportation app has escalated, with the app's creators resuming direct data extraction from the railway's servers just days before the Rosh Hashanah holiday. This move directly contradicts their previous commitment and defies legal threats from Israel Railways.
The decision by Better Rail stems from significant discrepancies and failures in the data provided by the Ministry of Transportation. While Israel Railways' own website displayed a special holiday schedule for the eve of the holiday, the Ministry of Transportation's database continued to show a standard Sunday schedule. To prevent passengers from receiving misleading information during the busy holiday period, the app's management decided to pull accurate data directly from the railway again.
Better Rail has also sent an urgent appeal to both the Ministry of Transportation and Israel Railways to rectify this data flaw, which affects all transportation apps in the country. Previously, Israel Railways had issued a stern warning of legal action against Better Rail, alleging that the app bypassed security measures, accessed computer systems, and illegally obtained proprietary information.
The app developers vehemently denied these accusations, emphasizing that Better Rail is a free, open-source project designed to make public information accessible to passengers. Israel Railways, however, maintained that any external entity must operate exclusively through the official Ministry of Transportation database.
Ironically, the public dispute and legal threats have boosted the app's popularity, with its user base doubling from 5,000 to over 10,000 in a single day, propelling it to the top of Israel's download charts. As the High Holidays approach and station congestion peaks, the conflict highlights the gap between bureaucratic protocols and the public's need for reliable, real-time information.
