Author Yoav Blum Explores Existential Crisis in New Novel

Israeli author Yoav Blum, known for his fantasy novels, has released a new work, "The Author," which delves into a profound existential reflection, moving away from his signature playful fantasy. In a candid interview, Blum discusses the novel's protagonist, Michael Koren, a successful writer grappling with a deep crisis, whose character was born from Blum's own post-October 7th reflections on the significance of his work. Koren's despair is palpable, as he describes stories as "leeches that suck us."

Blum explains that "The Author" is a departure from his previous books, marked by a more exposed, painful, and pessimistic tone, reflected even in its distinct cover design. He attributes this shift to the period in which the book was written, acknowledging that his personal experiences and thoughts are woven into his narratives. The novel also touches upon the loss of Koren's literary editor, Gideon, who was killed in a terrorist attack, a plot point that Blum states is his personal way of processing difficult experiences, rather than a national statement.

Discussing the current literary landscape, Blum notes his limited involvement in the business side of publishing but agrees that books are consumer products requiring marketing. He observes the shrinking attention span of readers, influenced by social media, and acknowledges that while AI can generate texts indistinguishable from human writing to the general public, he personally values the intimate connection with the text that AI cannot provide. He confirms that "The Author" was written by him, not AI.

Blum also addresses his identity as a writer, rejecting the label of a "sectoral" or "religious" author. While his internal world includes religious concepts, he emphasizes that his writing is not intended to convey specific religious messages. He prefers to be seen as a writer whose complexity and multifaceted identity are reflected in his work, urging readers not to view him or his books solely through a religious lens. He states he has never experienced alienation based on his religious background and hopes it is not a factor in how his work is perceived.
