NBA Analyst Warns Portland Trail Blazers Over Deni Avdija's Contract

NBA analyst Sam Quinn has raised concerns regarding the contract situation of Israeli player Deni Avdija with the Portland Trail Blazers. Quinn stated that Avdija could become a free agent in 2028, and while the Blazers are favored to retain him, the risk of losing him is significant. Quinn clarified his earlier remarks, which he felt were taken out of context, explaining that becoming a free agent and leaving as a free agent are different.

Quinn believes Avdija is not being paid enough, making a contract extension at his current salary unrealistic. He suggests the Blazers should offer Avdija a maximum contract or something close to it, as his current deal is too favorable to him. While extending contracts under such circumstances is difficult, Quinn pointed to precedents like the Utah Jazz with Lauri Markkanen and the Memphis Grizzlies with Jaren Jackson Jr.

The Blazers face additional contract decisions with Scottie Henderson and Toumani Camara, which could impact their ability to manage Avdija's potential extension. Quinn noted that Portland has a "bird rights" advantage, allowing them to offer Avdija more money and an extra year, making them favorites to re-sign him even if he becomes a free agent. However, he expressed concern over the team's "terrible summer" and the potential impact of new owner Tom Dundon.

Quinn also highlighted concerns about pairing Avdija with player Ja Morant, calling it a "very worrying" combination. He warned that another team clearing salary cap space could pose a "real threat" to Portland's ability to keep Avdija, urging the Blazers to proactively manage their cap space to avoid such risks.
