Morocco, Algeria, Israel Top List of French Fugitive Destinations

Morocco, Algeria, and Israel are the primary destinations for French fugitives sought by law enforcement, according to an internal report from France's National Brigade for Fugitive Research (BNRF) obtained by BFMTV. The report analyzes active Interpol Red Notices, which are requests for the location and arrest of wanted individuals internationally.

Morocco leads significantly with an estimated 218 French fugitives. Algeria follows with 124, and Israel is third with 87. Other notable destinations include Tunisia (59), the United Arab Emirates (48), Turkey, the United Kingdom (34), and the United States (20).

The BNRF report also examined the types of offenses for which fugitives are sought in these countries. Israel stands out for financial crimes, with 91% of French fugitives there wanted for such offenses. In contrast, drug trafficking is the main reason for fugitives in Morocco, accounting for 49% of cases.

Algeria and Tunisia see a higher proportion of fugitives sought for common law offenses and violence against persons not linked to organized crime, representing 41% and 47% respectively. These categories include domestic violence, child abduction, rape, and other sexual offenses.

In the United Arab Emirates, the breakdown is more varied, with financial crimes at 38%, drug trafficking at 33%, and organized crime (excluding drug trafficking) at 25%. The report specifically excludes terrorism-related offenses, as they are handled by specialized units.
