Finance Minister Smotrich, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid Trade Barbs Over Defense Budget

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich responded Thursday to criticism from opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot regarding the defense budget. Eisenkot, chairman of the "Yesh Atid" party, accused Smotrich of lying and prioritizing political considerations over national responsibility, particularly concerning the immediate needs of the IDF following the October 7th failures. Eisenkot argued that defense needs should not be subject to political haggling or delays.

Smotrich, in a post on his X account, addressed Eisenkot directly, stating that one cannot speak of unity and healing while simultaneously making statements like "the last of the keyboard warriors" and spreading hatred and division. Smotrich invited Eisenkot to his office to explain the workings of the budget law, fiscal frameworks, and legal methods for increasing the budget, suggesting this knowledge would be useful for Eisenkot as a "fighting opposition" after the elections.

Concluding his remarks ahead of the Jewish New Year, Smotrich stated that he forgave Eisenkot wholeheartedly and wished him and his family a happy new year. The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions and disagreements over national priorities, particularly concerning defense spending and the government's handling of security matters.
