From Pub Cleaner to Champions League Coach: Valdas Dambrauskas's Journey

Valdas Dambrauskas, the 49-year-old Lithuanian coach of Azerbaijan's Sabah FC, is set to manage his team against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League. This appearance marks a significant personal milestone for Dambrauskas, representing a full circle in his coaching career.

Twenty-two years ago, Dambrauskas worked various manual labor jobs in London, including polishing pub floors, gardening, and handyman work, to fund his coaching courses in England. His journey into football began at age 12 when he realized he wouldn't become a professional player but aspired to coach. To move to England, he participated in Lithuania's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" at 25, using his winnings to buy a plane ticket.

Upon arriving in England in 2002, he often juggled up to four jobs simultaneously to pay for his English Football Association coaching certifications. His initial involvement in the sport started with volunteering to coach children in London. In 2004, he joined Manchester United's football schools department, coaching youth players and becoming the first Lithuanian to earn a UEFA coaching license through the English FA.

He later held coaching positions at Fulham and Brentford before embarking on a senior coaching career, during which he won 13 titles in Eastern Europe, including championships in Lithuania, Croatia, and Bulgaria. Last season, Dambrauskas led Sabah to an Azerbaijani league and cup double, securing their first-ever qualification for the Champions League group stage after defeating Hapoel Be'er Sheva in a dramatic playoff.

The draw placed Dambrauskas's team in a challenging group with Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund.
