Yinon Magal Questions Haredi Draft After Soldiers Jailed Over Religious Observance

During a heated discussion on the program "The Patriots," participants addressed the recent imprisonment of religious Givati Brigade soldiers who refused to serve with a female paramedic due to their religious observance. Panelists reflected on their past debates regarding the conscription of Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) men into the IDF.

Yotam Zmiri expressed regret for his arguments with Yedidya Meir on the topic, admitting, "This kind of story makes me feel like an idiot for arguing so much with Yedidya Meir, who said the army doesn't really want the Haredi men and isn't prepared to give them what they need. Yinon Magal stated that after advocating for and promoting the draft of Haredi men, he now questions his stance. He believes the IDF's actions, leading to the soldiers' imprisonment for adhering to their rabbis' directives, indicate a deliberate progressive agenda within the military rather than an isolated incident. "All the chief of staff and all the generals are progressive. It's an agenda. This raises questions for me about my position on drafting Haredi men into the IDF," Magal said.

The Givati soldiers, students from a Hesder Yeshiva program, were reportedly detained for ten days after requesting not to serve with a female paramedic in the same armored personnel carrier. Their detention sparked public outcry and protests against the IDF's policies concerning religiously observant soldiers.
