Elior Zandani Releases New Musical Rendition of "Ochila La'El"

Singer-songwriter Elior Zandani has released a new musical rendition of the piyyut (liturgical poem) "Ochila La'El" (I Hope in God) ahead of the High Holy Days. The new version, titled "Ochila," features a two-part structure. The first part uses the melody by Rabbi Hillel Palai for "Ochila La'El," while the second part incorporates "A Prayer for the Poor" from Psalm 102, set to an original melody composed by Zandani himself.

The project began about a year ago when Zandani posted a rendition of "Ochila La'El" on social media. Due to positive reception and high listenership, he decided to officially release it this year, adding the new section. Actor Omer Hazan, a friend of Zandani, suggested incorporating "A Prayer for the Poor" into the piece. Zandani embraced the idea, composing a new melody for the psalm's text, which became the second part of the work.

Zandani explained that the text is very close to his heart, especially during the month of Elul, a period of repentance and forgiveness. He felt the need to deepen the prayer's personal and internal aspect. "This is how a rendition was born for me that is much more than just another song for the period of repentance. It is a prayer," Zandani stated. He described it as a prayer that begins with the public voice and moves to the personal and internal space of each individual, during a time when people seek forgiveness, mercy, and the chance to start anew.
