Sabrina Carpenter has won a five-year restraining order against William Applegate, 31, whom she says repeatedly tried to break into her home and assaulted one of her security guards. Under the order, Applegate must stay at least 100 yards, or 91.4 meters, away from Carpenter, as well as from her sister and her partner, who live with her.
Applegate fought the ruling, but did so without a lawyer. In court, he told the judge that he and Carpenter were "meant to be together as soon as possible" and claimed they were part of a military program requiring them to become a couple because it was "vital to the security of the homeland and the entire world." He also said Carpenter wanted him to come to her house and had looked into his eyes and sung to him during her Coachella performance in April, but that her staff and security had kept them apart.
Carpenter did not attend the hearing. She had been expected to testify remotely, but her testimony was ultimately unnecessary. Applegate said he would accept the situation if she told him directly that she did not want to meet him.
According to reports, the judge replied, "I understand that you believe that in order to save the world, you and the petitioner must be together," but added, "You must obey the order, not what you think is right, and not what you think the military is ordering you." Applegate is said to have tried to break into Carpenter's home more than 12 times, and in one incident he attacked a guard and reached her front door. He was arrested, released, and returned a few days later. A temporary restraining order was issued on May 29 and has now become permanent.
