MK Efrat Reitan Criticizes Israeli Media and Government's Role
Member of Knesset Efrat Reitan, chairwoman of the Democrats party faction, has voiced strong criticism of both the Israeli media and the government's actions towards it. In a podcast interview, Reitan argued that while the government attacks the press, media outlets themselves need to conduct self-reflection and be more courageous. She also addressed the controversy surrounding her party leader, Yair Golan, and alleged defamation by Sara Netanyahu, stating that a libel suit will be filed, calling the accusations a "horrific and baseless betrayal theory" and part of a broader disinformation campaign allegedly involving the Prime Minister's Office.
Reitan acknowledged that Prime Minister Netanyahu has partially succeeded in his efforts to undermine the press, comparing it to actions taken against the judiciary. She specifically criticized Channel 14 and i24, labeling them "regime channels" that the government is attempting to cultivate, while simultaneously pressuring other outlets. She pointed to the controversial broadcasting law, championed by Communications Minister Shlomo Karai, as evidence of the government's intent to control the media landscape and suppress criticism. Reitan highlighted a late-night amendment to the law that she claims provided specific regulatory benefits to i24, while other measures allegedly aimed to burden different channels, including diverting funds from the public broadcaster.
Despite her criticisms, Reitan stated she is not opposed to a media market reform, provided it adapts to the changing landscape, including streaming services. She noted positive aspects like the requirement for original content production. Regarding calls to shut down Channel 14, Reitan suggested instead that it should be held to the same standards and regulations as all other media outlets in Israel, including facing penalties for violations.
Reitan also expressed concern that mainstream media is not adequately reflecting the political reality or the fight for democracy, citing instances where coalition politicians received disproportionate airtime. She believes the media has a crucial role as the "fourth estate" and "watchdog of democracy" but has not done enough to inform the public about critical issues, including the war in Gaza, leading to a disconnect between Israelis and global perceptions of the country.
Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, Reitan expressed optimism for her party, aiming for more than the 10-11 seats predicted in polls. She described the election as "fateful for the existence of the State of Israel" and emphasized her party's commitment to preventing the current government from continuing its term, which she believes would grant it a "carte blanche."
