Court Dismisses Threat Charge Against Israeli Broadcaster Yinon Magal

A Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court has ruled that broadcaster Yinon Magal cannot be convicted of the threat charge brought against him, ordering it to be removed from the criminal complaint. The judge also accepted some of the defense's arguments regarding flaws in the complaint's wording.

The proceedings against Magal, a host on "HaPatriotim" and radio station 103FM, were initiated by a criminal complaint filed by Yaron Gadot Zartansky. The complaint accused Magal of making threats and libelous statements during a radio broadcast.

The specific threat in question was Magal's statement, "They'll throw you to hell, don't you understand?". However, Senior Judge Yael Pardeski determined that even if the complainant proved all the facts presented, it would not constitute a conviction for making threats.

Consequently, the court ordered the threat charge and related sections of the complaint to be struck. Additionally, the court accepted some defense claims concerning the complaint's formulation, leading to the removal of further sections that did not meet the requirements of the Criminal Procedure Law.

Magal's attorney, Adi Carmeli, argued throughout the proceedings that the complaint was filed in bad faith and used as a tool to silence criticism. Carmeli stated that the complainant was "using the process as a whip against a media personality, to deter and silence legitimate critical discourse," and requested the court dismiss the complaint.
