Nova Party Survivors Discuss Trauma and Substance Use at First Conference
Over 500 survivors of the October 7th Nova music festival, along with family members and bereaved families, gathered for a groundbreaking conference addressing the link between trauma and substance use. The event, organized by "Shomrim al HaBalance" (Guarding the Balance) and the Nova Community Tribe, aimed to reduce shame, identify distress, and encourage seeking help.
Keynote speakers emphasized the community's responsibility to support one another, identify those in distress, and offer timely assistance. The core belief is that community heals community, and open dialogue, mutual support, and accessible, shame-free help can make a significant difference.
A panel discussion featured community members sharing their experiences of life after the attack, their ongoing struggles with trauma, and the importance of sharing, support, and seeking aid. The conference sought to break down the stigma surrounding substance use as a coping mechanism for trauma.
Organizers stressed that survivors do not have to face their struggles alone. They urged anyone whose substance use has become a primary way to relax or cope with distress, or has negatively impacted their functioning, relationships, or health, to seek help. Open conversation was highlighted as the crucial first step toward change.
