European Sanctions on Israel Could Backfire, Analyst Warns

European nations imposing sanctions on Israel are inadvertently harming themselves, according to analyst Alex Nachumson. Instead of focusing on Palestinian terrorism and threats to its own security, Europe is pressuring Israel, a country under attack. Nachumson argues that Europe is currently facing its own deep social crises, including large-scale immigration, integration challenges, the rise of Muslim communities not always aligned with Western values, and the growth of Islamist movements.

Simultaneously, European right-wing movements are gaining strength while traditional left-wing parties are losing support. Nachumson suggests this shift reflects a public perception that European leaders have lost their sense of priority. He states that Europe is essentially shooting itself in the foot by lecturing Israel and imposing sanctions, rather than addressing its own internal security, borders, and values.

In contrast, the United States, under the Trump administration, provides significant political backing to Israel. The U.S. Ambassador to Israel has labeled British actions as discriminatory against Jewish people and warned of potential U.S. repercussions. Nachumson emphasizes the immense strategic importance of the alliance with the U.S. and urges Israel to do everything possible to preserve it, particularly the support from the pro-Israel Republican faction in Congress and the American political system.

While Europe is free to choose its own path, Nachumson concludes that Israel is not obligated to follow. He posits that the critical question for Europe may not be when a Palestinian state will emerge, but whether Europe can maintain its identity, security, and foundational values.
