Former US Envoy: Lebanese President Ready to Disarm Hezbollah

Former U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, David Hale, stated in an interview that he received the impression Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is prepared "to go all the way" in disarming Hezbollah. Hale, who served as ambassador for nine years, described Aoun as a professional military man who cannot accept militias challenging state authority. He believes Aoun views current Israeli military actions as a historic opportunity to end Iranian influence and eliminate Hezbollah as an independent militia.

Hale indicated that Aoun's aspirations extend beyond the security annex of a framework agreement, aiming for a faster path to peace and full relations with Israel. Addressing concerns about a potential civil war hindering this process, Hale asserted that the President does not fear such an outcome and that these worries are exaggerated. He recalled that when Hezbollah called for civil disobedience after the framework agreement was signed in June, the public did not take to the streets.

The former ambassador emphasized that Lebanon today is different from the past, but stressed the need to assist those who share the goal of removing Hezbollah and Iranian influence. He also noted a sincere effort by Lebanon to locate the remains of Jewish community leaders murdered in Beirut in the 1980s, as part of a broader desire to build trust with Israel.
