Israel Opens First Permanent Embassy in Slovenia
Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Saar inaugurated the first permanent Israeli embassy in Slovenia on Tuesday. This marks the fifth new embassy Israel has established in the past eighteen months. The decision to open the embassy in Ljubljana was made following the rise of Janez Janša's government, known for its pro-Israel stance. Saar's office highlighted that the previous Slovenian government had adopted a hostile approach towards Israel, including canceling Israir flights to Ljubljana, declaring Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu persona non grata, and suspending arms deals.
The current Slovenian government, sworn in this past June, has reversed these restrictions. "We are opening an embassy two days before Rosh Hashanah. This is a symbol of new beginnings and new hopes," Saar stated during the opening ceremony. Slovenian Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer announced that bilateral agreements were signed covering cooperation in youth policy, sports, education, and student scholarships.
A business delegation, comprising representatives from leading Israeli companies and economic organizations, accompanied Saar on the visit. An Israeli-Slovenian business forum, attended by the foreign ministers of both nations, is also taking place as part of the visit.
