Dozens of Sea Turtle Hatchlings Saved from Artificial Light on Netanya Beach

The story · English

An unusual event occurred on Sunday night at Poleg Beach in Netanya, Israel, when dozens of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings emerged from their nest. Instead of heading towards the sea, the young turtles were drawn towards the bright lights of a nearby amusement facility. This artificial light pollution can disrupt their natural navigation system, which relies on the reflection of moonlight and stars on the water.

Without quick intervention, the hatchlings faced a high risk of dehydration, predation, and other dangers before reaching the water. Fortunately, a group of teenagers present on the beach noticed the hatchlings moving in the wrong direction and contacted the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

The authority dispatched a volunteer from its sea turtle project, operating in cooperation with the Netanya Municipality. The volunteer, accompanied by family members and assisted by the teenagers, successfully located and guided 73 hatchlings safely to the sea.

Officials from the Nature and Parks Authority highlighted the incident as an example of the significant danger posed by light pollution to wildlife, as well as the importance of public awareness and vigilance. They thanked the teenagers for their quick action and thanked the dozens of volunteers who monitor sea turtle nesting seasons annually along Israel's coastlines, relocating nests to protected areas to improve hatchling survival rates.
