Greece Deepens Defense Ties With Israel, Defying Turkish Pressure

Greece is set to significantly expand its strategic and defense cooperation with Israel, signaling to Turkey that its objections will not alter Athens' chosen course. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated in an interview with SKAI TV that cooperation with Israel will continue and develop, particularly in security, defense technologies, and leveraging Israeli expertise. Gerapetritis explicitly addressed Turkey's reaction, asserting that Athens' international alliances are not dictated by other nations' desires and that Greece will independently select its partners.

Defense remains a crucial area of collaboration, with ongoing joint exercises, military-technical cooperation, and arms deals between Greece and Israel. Notably, Greece is integrating Israeli air defense systems into its multi-billion euro modernization program. This move solidifies Israeli technology as a key component of Greece's defense strategy, a development particularly sensitive for Ankara due to their long-standing rivalry in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean seas.

The announcement of closer ties with Israel coincides with a hardening of Greece's stance towards Turkey. Gerapetritis reported a notable escalation in Ankara's position and confirmed that European institutions and EU foreign ministers have been informed. While Greece has not ruled out seeking practical support from allies if tensions escalate, it does not currently view military conflict as inevitable. Greece has also drawn lines on specific issues, refusing to concede to Turkish demands for the demilitarization of Greek islands or claims over "gray zones" in the Aegean. Gerapetritis strongly criticized Turkey's "Blue Homeland" doctrine, which outlines expanded maritime claims, labeling it expansionist and declaring an end to Greece's passive response to Ankara's demands.
