Arkansas Governor Links Boycotts of Israel to Antisemitism

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Republican Governor of Arkansas, has declared that boycotts against Israel are antisemitic, referencing her state's economic sanctions against such actions. "It's simple: boycotting the only Jewish state in the world is antisemitic," she stated on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. She further emphasized, "Arkansas law makes it clear that we will not do business with any company that chooses to deliberately engage in BDS movement activities. Period."

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement advocates for economic, cultural, and academic pressure on Israel. Several U.S. states have enacted laws prohibiting or restricting public contracts with companies that boycott Israel.

Sanders' statement follows the UK's announcement of an embargo on products from Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham clarified that these measures target Israeli government policy, not the country's population. In response, Israel is reportedly preparing retaliatory measures against France and other European nations that have imposed restrictions related to settlements.

Additionally, the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed bipartisan legislation that would deny federal aid to higher education institutions participating in commercial or academic boycotts of Israel associated with the BDS movement.
