Israeli Climate Forum Urges Swift Approval of National Food Security Plan
The Israeli Climate Forum, established by the President of Israel, has called on the government to immediately approve the National Food Security Plan. The forum warned that delays in its approval jeopardize Israel's ability to ensure food security for its population in the coming decades.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security presented the National Food Security Plan 2050 and its implementation steps on Monday during the National Food Security Conference 2050. The plan, however, has not yet been approved by the government. A scheduled discussion for Sunday was postponed due to opposition from the Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich.
The Ministry of Finance cited legal difficulties with approving a plan that would bind future governments for decades so close to an election. The estimated cost to implement the plan ranges from NIS 3 to 5 billion, depending on the needs of various ministries. It includes interim goals for 2030 and 2040 and addresses challenges across the food supply chain.
These challenges include population growth, climate change, water and land scarcity, and potential disruptions to supply chains.
