Netanyahu Demands Apology, Millions from Haaretz Newspaper

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sent a legal notice to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and three of its journalists, demanding an apology and NIS 1 million (approximately $267,000 USD) within 72 hours. The notice stems from a Haaretz report published on Wednesday, which claimed Netanyahu received intelligence about Hamas's intentions approximately a week and a half before the October 7th attacks but did not relay it to security officials. The report also alleged Netanyahu had a 45-minute conversation with the President of the United Arab Emirates, who warned him of a major Hamas plan.

Netanyahu, through his lawyer Uriel Nicai, vehemently denies the report's claims, calling them "a complete fabrication, a baseless fiction, and a malicious misrepresentation." He asserts he received no such warning from the UAE president or from Egypt. The Prime Minister's office argues the publication is intended to harm him and improperly influence upcoming election results.

In addition to the NIS 1 million settlement demand, Netanyahu is requesting Haaretz remove the article from all its digital platforms, website, and social media accounts. The newspaper must also publish a prominent apology and retraction on its front page and website, with the wording pre-approved by Netanyahu's legal team. Failure to comply within the 72-hour deadline will result in a defamation lawsuit seeking over NIS 2.5 million (approximately $667,000 USD), plus legal costs.

The Haaretz report specifically named journalists Shlomi Eldar, Ruti Yuval, and Uri Misgav. The legal notice was sent on Wednesday, with the ultimatum set to expire on Saturday. The Prime Minister's office stated no further notice will be issued before legal proceedings commence.
