Channel 14 Criticized by Former Host, Defends Media Pluralism
Journalist and television host Shi Golden, formerly of Channel 14 and now with Reshet 13, has voiced strong opinions regarding the Israeli media landscape, particularly Channel 14. Golden, who previously hosted current affairs programs on Channel 14 before leaving in November 2024, expressed concern over potential moves to shut down the right-leaning outlet, calling such an action 'unthinkable' and vowing to protest if it were to happen.
Speaking on the "Ha'Liberal" podcast, Golden stated that while he has reservations about certain developments at Channel 14, its existence is crucial for providing an alternative voice. He argued that the Israeli right, which previously felt limited to hearing perspectives like Razi Barkai or Aryeh Golan, now has options such as Miki Tavori and Noa Dromi on Fridays.
Golden acknowledged that Channel 14 has 'gone too far' in the past one to two years, indicating internal disagreements. However, he defended the principle of media pluralism, suggesting that having multiple channels with distinct editorial lines, even up to eight, is beneficial. He drew a parallel to his time at the newspaper 'Haaretz,' noting that even within a publication with a clear editorial stance, journalists can find their own space.
When challenged by podcast host Dror Rafael about potential editorial bias at Reshet 13, Golden denied that the channel operates with an explicit anti-Netanyahu agenda. He explained that journalists naturally seek stories, and while many at Reshet 13 may lean left, there are also many journalists at Channel 14, whom he considers genuine journalists, reflecting diverse viewpoints within their respective outlets.
