The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding overnight, between Wednesday and Thursday, to end the war, according to two senior American officials. The agreement was signed digitally, which made it effective immediately. A photo of the signed document was sent to the Iranians and to the mediators.
According to the article, President Donald Trump personally signed a copy of the agreement during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles. The White House also confirmed that the president signed the memorandum while in Versailles.
The text of the deal, as described by the reporting, includes a statement by U.S. and Iranian officials that military activity would stop immediately and permanently on all fronts, including Lebanon. The first clause also says both sides will not conduct military action against each other and will work to preserve Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The article says this could mean that any final agreement would likely require an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
The report also says Iran insists that control of the Strait of Hormuz belongs only to Iran and Oman, and that enriched uranium in Iran, in its words, “will not be transferred out of the country.” Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on X at 4:01 a.m. that the mediator-approved memorandum would take effect immediately, and as a first step Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately while the U.S. would lift the naval blockade.
