Ofer Yanai Leads Nofar Energy to Record Growth and Expansion
The past year marked a turning point for Ofer Yanai, controlling shareholder and founder of the renewable energy company Nofar Energy. Following the abrupt resignations of co-CEOs Nadav Tana and Shahar Gershon in June, Yanai assumed the CEO role. Since then, the company has seen significant developments. Yanai has entered into an agreement that could yield him 760 million shekels, contingent on Nofar Energy reaching a 16 billion shekel valuation by the end of 2028. Given the company's valuation has grown from 3.6 billion shekels to 6.8 billion shekels since Yanai took charge, this target appears achievable.
Yanai has steered Nofar Energy, traditionally focused on renewables, into conventional energy production by acquiring a controlling stake in Alumay, which owns the Dourad gas-fired power plant. After a dispute with fellow Dourad shareholder Amos Luzon, Yanai sold Alumay's share in the plant. Subsequently, he acquired a 47.5% stake in the under-construction Reindir gas-fired power plant.
Concurrently, Nofar Energy has expanded its renewable energy project pipeline, acquiring projects in the United States, Europe, and Israel. The company has also ventured into energy storage, signing agreements for the construction and operation of storage facilities for various firms, and has entered the data center sector.
Yanai has also secured investments from institutional bodies like Leumi Partners, Clal, and The Phoenix. However, he faced opposition from some bondholders, prompting him to initiate early repayment of relevant bond series. In a separate matter, Yanai clashed with fans of the Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball team, which he owns, over their support for a strike for the release of hostages, contrary to his stance. Potential reconciliation might come if he secures a EuroLeague license for the team and leads them to their first championship in nearly 60 years.
