Prediction Markets Accused of Manipulation and Insider Trading

Calcalist
Translated & summarized from Calcalist by baba
The story · English

Prediction market platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, which claim to forecast future events based on knowledge and research, are instead being described as manipulated gambling markets that can shape reality. Numerous troubling incidents have been reported, including insider trading. In Israel, a citizen and reservist were indicted this year for allegedly using military intelligence to bet on the timing of attacks in Iran via Polymarket. In the US, a soldier involved in the capture of Nicolás Maduro was arrested after winning $400,000 by betting on the Venezuelan president's ouster on Polymarket.

Insider trading is just the tip of the iceberg. In March, an Israeli journalist reported receiving threats demanding he alter a story about a missile strike due to a Polymarket bet. Researchers have documented gamblers manipulating short-term Bitcoin price bets. For the 2024 US presidential election, a single Polymarket user wagered tens of millions of dollars on a Donald Trump victory, potentially influencing media narratives and campaign momentum. In another instance, gamblers coordinated a pressure campaign on a research institute to alter maps of the Ukraine-Russia war frontlines, aiming to secure bets on Russian control of a railway station.

Despite these issues, Polymarket and Kalshi, valued at $15 billion and $22 billion respectively, continue to attract investors. The substantial sums involved suggest that the use of insider information and reality manipulation on these platforms are likely to increase.
