Prison Guards Filmed Organizing Attack on Inmate Who Later Died

Twelve prison guards from Ketziot Prison have been charged with manslaughter following the death of security prisoner Taa'r Abu Asab. Newly released footage shows the guards preparing to enter the inmate's cell, with the shift commander briefing them and stating he would take responsibility for the actions.

The video depicts 18 correctional officers organizing for what is described as a violent entry into the security prisoners' cell. The commander allegedly instructed the guards to lie if an investigation was opened. He then led the team into the cell where the deceased and eight other inmates were held.

According to the indictment, the accused guards conspired to assault the inmates, striking them with fists, kicks, and in some cases, batons. The shift commander oversaw the operation and also participated in striking inmates. After several minutes, he ordered the guards to stop, and they exited the cell without reporting the assault or any unusual incident during the count.

Shortly after the incident, the inmate collapsed and lost consciousness. He was taken to the prison clinic and later to Soroka Hospital, where his death was pronounced. The 12 guards are accused of negligently causing the death of the inmate, who succumbed hours after the beating.
