Ancient Poem from Damascus Revived in New Musical Arrangement

The musical ensemble Shirat HaDorot, in collaboration with the Sayed Nahmias family, has released a new rendition of the piyyut (liturgical poem) "Chon Tachon," set to a melody traditionally sung by the Jewish community of Damascus. This release is part of an ongoing project dedicated to reviving the liturgical poetry traditions of Damascus Jewry.

The project, supported by the Ministry of Heritage and Yad Ben-Zvi, aims to preserve and reintroduce these ancient musical forms. The new recording of "Chon Tachon" was arranged by Elad Gabai, with graphic design by Eran Tzirelman.

Shirat HaDorot described their work as a "connection of awe, prayer, and gratitude," and a "connecting tradition." The performance features members of the Sayed family, including Mordechai, Shlomo, Uriel, Michael David, and their grandchildren. Shlomo Sayed Nahmias is responsible for the musical direction, while Yair Harel from Yad Ben-Zvi provides musical and artistic accompaniment.

A group of musicians contributed to the recording, including Tzion Badi on violin, Yaron Menashe on qanun, Dror Yachazkel on oud, Hanani Zait on ney flute, Ariel Smith on percussion, Yakir Menachem on guitar, and Avithar Hermesh on double bass.
