Deepfake Rabbi Scams Russian-Speaking Israelis with Fake Elon Musk Investments
A sophisticated scam targeting Russian-speaking Israelis is rapidly spreading across social media platforms, utilizing deepfake technology to impersonate a respected rabbi. The fraudulent video features a digitally generated rabbi, who bears a resemblance to Rabbi Bentsion Zilber, a prominent figure in the Russian-speaking community. This fabricated religious leader offers viewers a "kosher investment program from Elon Musk," promising a guaranteed weekly income of $1,500.
The scheme was exposed by Fishermen, an Israeli company specializing in combating SMS and internet fraud. According to the company, criminals use AI to generate convincing videos by inputting text into a neural network, which then creates a lifelike avatar with synchronized speech. This represents a significant escalation in cybercrime tactics, moving beyond simple phishing attempts to exploit deep psychological manipulation.
Matan Gidion, CEO of Fishermen, highlighted that this new wave of scams combines advanced technology with a deep understanding of human psychology. The choice of the Russian-speaking population in Israel as a target is strategic, as many in this demographic are elderly or recent immigrants who may be less familiar with AI capabilities and tend to trust authoritative figures. This makes them particularly vulnerable to such deceptive schemes.

Any offers of quick financial gains or dubious investment opportunities presented by seemingly authoritative figures online should be treated with immediate suspicion. Users are advised not to share personal data, bank card details, or one-time SMS codes based on such videos.
