Greece’s anti-violence committee has issued formal penalties after the fight that ended Game 5 of the Greek league finals between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. The altercation involved Kendrick Nunn and Tyrique Jones, who were seen scuffling in the tunnel after the game.
After reviewing video footage, police reports, technical observers’ accounts and statements from its own representatives on site, the committee fined Nunn 50,000 euros. Panathinaikos was also ordered to play one home game behind closed doors.
Officials said the punishment was tightened because club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos had already been fined 50,000 euros earlier this season for similar behavior. Combined with earlier disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Greek league’s disciplinary court, Panathinaikos is now expected to start next season with four home matches without fans.
The case is not over. Along with the ruling on Nunn and the club, the committee summoned Panathinaikos, as well as players Matthias Lessort and Jerian Grant, for a hearing on June 22 over suspected involvement in a “serious violent incident” that allegedly took place between club personnel, players and police near the locker rooms immediately after the final whistle. If the committee finds that serious misconduct also occurred in that episode, Panathinaikos could face additional penalties.
