Police Commissioner Won't Back Down Amid Ministry Dispute, Source Says

A senior official in the office of Police Commissioner Danny Levy stated that Levy is "not a puppet" and that anyone who disagrees with him should "fire him," escalating a dispute with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The sharp remarks from Levy's associates come amid a deadlock over senior appointments and police budgets.

Despite Ben-Gvir's demand to halt senior appointments, the police's senior command completed discussions and approved a series of promotions, including high-ranking positions. However, these appointments await the minister's signature, which is not forthcoming. The police are also facing a delay of approximately 400 million shekels from their budget, funds that Ben-Gvir is withholding.

Sources close to the Police Commissioner indicated that Levy has no intention of backing down and is not ruling out legal action. They emphasized that Levy "will not move from what he says and will continue on his path even if the price is his removal." Regarding the withheld funds, the source clarified that the money is designated for police stations and operational needs, not for the ministry or the minister's office, dismissing any claims to the contrary.

Senior officials reiterated that no new appointments will be made as long as Danny Levy remains Commissioner, implying that the minister's actions are hindering the police force's operational capacity and personnel development.
