Great excitement and a sense of Torah joy gripped all those who took part in the impressive l’chaim event held this week at the home of one of the great disseminators of Torah in our generation, Rabbi Meir Luria, head of the Eitz Chaim Yeshiva of Bobov and head of the advanced kollel for hora’ah, Chalat Yaakov Breish.

The yeshiva head, known as one of the greatest analysts of our generation, who breaks down every sugya to its deepest layers in his unique style and whose Torah attracts thousands around the world, including renowned yeshiva heads and Torah teachers, celebrated with great emotion the publication of his new book, Shiurei Rabbi Meir. The book contains his in-depth lectures on the complex topics in tractates Gittin and Ketubot, delivered to his students who hear his teachings in his large Eitz Chaim Yeshiva of Bobov. These shiurim, which have earned renown throughout the world, now join more than twenty earlier volumes already published from his profound lectures across many areas of Torah study. This book, however, is distinctive, because it was written, as he spoke it, in fluent scholarly language, with many headings and additions that make it easier for the learner who wishes to taste the pleasant radiance of his clear Torah teachings.

The editing work on the book took two years, carried out by distinguished and well-known editors deeply versed in Torah and thoroughly familiar with the intricacies of the sugyot. The pages were also reviewed by many leading Torah scholars, who praised the enormous effort and substantial investment in the book, which is unique of its kind in the Torah world.

On Monday evening, the institute’s members gathered together with his close students for a l’chaim marking the publication. The event was held without external splendor or an elaborate menu, but with incomparable elevation of spirit. For about two full hours, the yeshiva head expounded his unique approach to analytical study, seasoning his remarks with facts, stories, and sacred sayings from the great righteous figures of the generations, and on the obligation to study with depth and clear reasoning in accordance with truth. He also elaborated on the importance of writing Torah insights, since without that it is almost impossible to arrive at the truth, because only when one must reduce thoughts to letters and pages does one see the full course of the sugya and can then examine whether it is indeed clear, as he put it.

Later, he recited the blessing of Shehecheyanu with reverence and love, and those present sang melodies of love for Torah. The yeshiva head poured l’chaim for the members of the institute that is publishing his Torah, and rose to a spirited dance in Torah joy over “who has given us the Torah of truth and planted eternal life within us.” At the end, he distributed the new book to the institute members with warmth and appreciation for their great work.

The event left a strong impression on everyone present and was etched into their minds for years, for “they are life to those who find them.”
