Palestinian Authority Seeks U.S. Visas for President Abbas Ahead of UN Session

The Palestinian Authority has submitted multiple visa applications to the United States for President Mahmoud Abbas, aiming to ascertain Washington's stance on his potential participation in the upcoming UN General Assembly session. This move comes amid uncertainty about whether the U.S. administration will reimpose an entry ban on the Palestinian leader, a restriction that prevented his physical attendance last year. In 2023, Abbas was forced to deliver his address via video link from UN headquarters due to these restrictions.

Despite previous indications from U.S. officials about denying Abbas entry, the Palestinian side received signals that visa applications would still be considered. Abbas's address is reportedly scheduled for the same date as that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The U.S. State Department maintains that visa decisions are based on strict national security standards and that specific cases are not commented on due to privacy concerns. Concurrently, the Palestinian leadership is seeking diplomatic support from Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently discussed visa restrictions for the Palestinian delegation in a phone call with the U.S. president.
