Jewish Children Raised in Arab Villages Receive Support to Reconnect with Heritage
Hundreds of Jewish children are currently growing up in Arab villages across Israel, with many having little to no connection to their Jewish traditions and identity. While public attention is focused on national security, the organization Yad L'Achim is discreetly working to help these children and their mothers reconnect with Jewish life. The organization has been identifying and supporting women and children in these situations for years, noting that each case requires sensitive, individualized, and ongoing attention, often taking months or even years to complete.
The disconnect from tradition is particularly evident during key childhood milestones. While many Jewish children learn biblical stories, holidays, and customs, these children may be unfamiliar with this world. Even significant events like a Bar Mitzvah might pass without recognition. Yad L'Achim aims to facilitate children's connection to their heritage, sometimes after prolonged periods of estrangement.
In addition to working with the children, the organization assists women seeking to leave relationships and life circumstances that have led to their disconnection from Jewish society. This transition is often just the beginning of a long process requiring personal support and assistance with various needs. Yad L'Achim describes this as a "quiet campaign" focused on identity, belonging, and the Jewish home, distinct from border defense but equally vital. Ahead of the High Holy Days, the organization has launched a fundraising campaign to sustain its efforts. Donations will fund the ongoing, discreet support for women and children, enabling the continuation of work with existing cases and new ones.
The organization emphasizes that contributions help ensure more Jewish children can learn about their identity, traditions, and roots. As a gesture, donors' names will be given to emissaries who will pray for them at holy sites.
