Singer Yaakov Abuhatzeira Releases New Single 'Ben Adama' Ahead of High Holidays

Ashdod-based cantor and singer Yaakov Abuhatzeira has released a new single titled 'Ben Adama' (Son of Earth), a contemporary rendition of a centuries-old piyut (liturgical poem) by Rabbi Abraham ibn Ezra. The release comes just before the start of the Selichot (penitential prayers) services, a period leading up to the High Holidays.

'Ben Adama' explores the human life cycle, from childhood to old age, reflecting on life's pursuits and the passage of time. The piyut's chorus, 'Ben Adama yizkor be'moladato, ki le'et ketz yashuv li'yoldato' (The son of earth will remember in his homeland, for at the end he will return to his birthplace), emphasizes the need to remember one's origins and purpose.

The musical arrangement was handled by Bibi Edri, who aimed to blend the traditional piyut with a modern, accessible sound while preserving the original text's depth. Abuhatzeira praised Edri's understanding of the emotional core of the piece, noting his ability to create a contemporary yet soulful arrangement.

A music video, animated by Meir Sher, accompanies the single. It visually depicts the journey of a person through different life stages, aligning with the piyut's lyrical themes. Abuhatzeira commended Sher's dedication and meticulous attention to detail in bringing the visual concept to life.

Abuhatzeira's previous single, released about a month ago, was 'Ani Ashir Beshira,' based on a piyut by Rabbi Eliyahu Abuhatzeira. The release of 'Ben Adama' is positioned as a timely offering for introspection during the period of repentance and self-examination.
