Volkswagen to Sell German Plant for Defense Production
Volkswagen is planning to sell its plant in Osnabrück, Germany, to investment firm Aurelius Capital and the state of Lower Saxony. The move aims to transform the facility into a center for developing and manufacturing security and defense solutions. Approximately 1,400 of the current 1,800 jobs are expected to be preserved.
Aurelius Capital is set to acquire a controlling stake in Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH, with Lower Saxony holding a minority share. A primary focus for the new operation will be air defense systems and components. A potential initial project involves collaboration with the Israeli defense company Rafael, known for its Iron Dome missile defense system.
Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman stated the project's strategic goal is the full localization of production for technologies protecting Germany and other EU countries. Automotive production at the Osnabrück site will continue until the summer of 2027, after which the transition to defense-related activities will gradually occur. The deal is pending approval from Volkswagen's corporate bodies and regulatory authorities.
