Iran Vows Painful Response to US Sanctions Amid Escalating Tensions

Iran intends to retaliate against the United States for sanctions that are severely impacting its economy and regime. A high-ranking Iranian official warned of a "painful response" should new attacks occur, according to Reuters. The confrontation between Iran and the US, following six months of strikes by the US and Israel against Iran, appears to be at a standstill. A preliminary ceasefire agreement reached in June has been broken, and diplomatic efforts to restart peace talks have yielded no significant results. After a period of relative calm throughout most of August, mutual strikes have resumed.

On Saturday, the US Central Command reported striking three Iranian tankers after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy vessels. Following these exchanges, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the US must recognize that the rules of engagement with Iran have changed. Tehran has demonstrated its capability to strike American targets and interests in neighboring countries and its ability to disrupt oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route through which approximately one-fifth of global oil passed before the conflict began.

Earlier, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Abdollahi, commented that for over 80 years, the US has not been accustomed to other nations openly rejecting its demands.
